MARCH 2012

MARCH IS NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Women History Month’s origin first began with a Presidential proclamation which granted the week of March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week”. Since then, the weeks have grown significantly to eventually evolve into a full month of learning about the extraordinary and historic contributions of women in our nation. As an indie publisher headed by a female CEO, Casa Zia Productions found it interesting to note that the first woman publisher in American history was Mary Katherine Goddard. In 1766, she along with her widowed mother published the Providence Gazette Newspaper and the annual West’s Almanack. In 1777, she became the first printer to offer copies of the Declaration of Independence that included the signer’s names and in 1789 opened a bookstore in Baltimore, Maryland. Thanks Mary Katherine for kicking the door open!

Are there women, past and / or present, that continue to influence your lives, encourage your dreams? Take a moment to reflect on their contributions and if you have the wonderful opportunity to experience ‘modern day HERoines’ in the form of mothers, sisters, teachers, mentors, strive to show your appreciation and continue to be the very best that you can be! Who knows, you may be a SHERO for the next generation of women to come!
